Reclaiming Edmund Boulevard
Guide to Address Changes
We add and refine to this Guide as we learn more. Last updated on Wednesday, October 22.
Following City Council approval and publication on September 20, 2025, Edmund Boulevard officially changed to Lena Smith Boulevard. We know that address changes for residents come with some inconvenience. Thank you for your patience and collaboration as our neighborhood moves forward with Lena Smith Boulevard—a name that reflects our shared values and history.
This Guide is meant to make things easier by outlining what the City of Minneapolis has already taken care of, what you may need to update, and what requires no action at all. This is the most up-to-date version of our Guide and so we are no longer offering paper versions. (New)
We are also offering Walk-In Support Sessions at Longfellow Community Council (3101 Minnehaha Avenue):
-
Thursday, October 16, 6–8 p.m.
-
Tuesday, October 21, 6–8 p.m.
-
Wednesday, October 29, 6–8 p.m. (New)
What’s Already Been Done
Starting September 20, 2025, staff of the City of Minneapolis already began coordinating with agencies to ensure that essential services continue without interruption. You do not need to contact the following providers:
-
USPS – Mail forwarding will continue automatically for 18 months.
-
Emergency services – Police, Fire, and EMS have updated their databases.
-
City of Minneapolis utilities – Water, sewer, and garbage are already updated.
-
Energy providers – Xcel Energy and CenterPoint Energy have been notified of changes to service addresses. You may still need to contact these companies regarding contact information for the account. Call Xcel Energy at 800-895-4999. Call CenterPoint at 800-245-2377. (New)
-
Public maps (Google Maps, GPS, and official city maps) will update over time.
Tip: If you receive mail with a yellow forwarding label, it means that the sender hasn’t updated your new address. Keep these envelopes to track who needs a reminder.

No Action Needed
Some records remain valid and some services continue even without an updated address:
-
Voting: You may use either “Edmund Blvd.” or “Lena Smith Blvd.” for the Nov. 4 election. Same-day registration at the polls can go forward with either address.
-
Passports: These do not list an address, so no update needed.
-
Checks and credit cards: Still valid until you reorder or renew.
-
Car titles, mortgages and deeds: These remain legally valid and do not require applications or fees. The City's readdressing of a property does not affect the legal description of that property or its identification at the County Recorder's Office. Of course, lenders may prefer your updated mailing address.

State ID or Driver’s License or REAL ID at DVS/DMV
The Department of Motor Vehicles needs current address information for the creation of IDs and for renewing vehicle tabs. This is a particularly useful address change as it can be used as proof of the new address for other address change purposes. Begin online at the below link, then finish the process in person at a DMV Office.

At an earlier stage of the civic procedures this summer, we understood that waivers for the relatively small fee here would be possible, but the City since learned and informed us that state-level procedures for waivers around readdressing have changed since 2022. CM Aurin Chowdhury explored a few work-arounds, but found nothing that was suitable or helpful here. This was discussed in the letter from the Ward 12 office which should have arrived to all residences on the week of Monday, October 20. (New)

Property Tax at the Hennepin County Assessor's office (New)
As stated above, Property Identification Numbers (PIDs) recorded with the County are already being changed on your behalf by the City. You will not need to file an application or pay any fees in that process. Addresses in property records are only useful as a means of reference, i.e. they are not intrinsic to a property record. However, you should note your change of address with the Hennepin County Assessor's Office for ease of communication.
